Two jobs, one plan
Web design and SEO, built together from the start
Web design and SEO work best as one job, planned by one person, from the very first conversation. That is my whole approach: I run Found First, an SEO consultancy, so I research what your customers search for, plan the pages around it, then write and design the site myself. It is the affordable way to get a website that looks right and gets found.

The usual problem
When design and SEO happen separately, both get weaker.
The designer goes first
You get beautiful pages built around the brand, not around searches. Then someone tries to squeeze keywords in, and the copy starts to read like a robot wrote it.
The SEO goes first
You get pages that target the right terms but feel cluttered and cold. Visitors arrive, find nothing that builds trust, and leave again.
The redesign goes wrong
A new site replaces an old one that ranked. Old addresses break, and the traffic that took years to build disappears in a week.
How I combine them
One plan, from search to enquiry.
Every decision gets made with both people and search engines in mind. In my opinion, that is the only way a small business site can do both jobs on a sensible budget.
- 01 · Research
Find the searches.
I look at what your customers type, how competitive each search is and which ones deserve a page.
- 02 · Plan
Map the pages.
Each page gets one job and one main search. The structure is agreed before any design starts.
- 03 · Write and design
Build around it.
Copy answers the search quickly. Design makes the answer easy to read and the next step obvious.
- 04 · Measure
Watch what happens.
Search Console and simple tracking show which pages bring visitors, calls and forms.

Redesigning a site that ranks
Keep what works. Fix what does not.
If your current site already brings in some search traffic, a redesign needs care. This is the checklist I follow.
- Audit the old siteI list every page that gets visits or links, using Search Console and a crawl of the site.
- Decide page by pageKeep, improve, merge or retire. Nothing disappears by accident.
- Redirect every old address301 redirects send visitors and search engines from old URLs to the closest new page.
- Carry over what earns trustReviews, case studies and useful answers that already rank stay, often rewritten to read better.
- Check after launchI submit the new sitemap and watch for errors in the weeks after launch.

After launch
A launch is the start line, not the finish.
Once your site is live, search engines start to form an opinion about it. Reviews, links from local organisations, and fresh, useful pages all help that opinion improve.
Some owners like to handle that themselves, using the content plan I leave them. Others prefer ongoing help through Found First. Either way, you start from a site that was built for search rather than one that needs rescuing.
Questions
Design and SEO questions
Is it better to hire one person for web design and SEO?
For a small business, usually yes. When the designer and the SEO are separate, each one undoes a little of the other's work. One person planning both avoids pretty pages nobody finds and optimised pages nobody enjoys reading.
I already rank on Google. Will a redesign put that at risk?
It can, if the move is careless. Before I rebuild, I list every page that brings in visitors, keep the content that works, and set up 301 redirects from old addresses to new ones. I check Search Console after launch to catch anything that slips.
How long before a new site shows up in search?
Google often finds a new page within days, especially once the sitemap is submitted. Ranking well for competitive searches takes longer, typically months. Local searches with a good Google Business Profile tend to move faster.
Do you write blog posts too?
The Website + Visibility package includes a simple content plan: a short list of useful articles or pages that would help you rank, in the order I would tackle them. Writing them can be part of ongoing work with Found First, or you can write them yourself.
What does it cost to combine web design and SEO?
The SEO groundwork is included in every package, from £590. Website + Visibility, from £1,750, adds local SEO structure, Google Business Profile guidance, tracking and a content plan. Ongoing SEO is optional and quoted separately.
